About Me

Photo of Troy W. PennieHello, my friends and fellow Smurf fans! Let me introduce myself, my name is Troy and as of this writing I am 37 years old. I am disabled with Muscular Dystrophy and have the worst form of this degenerative muscle disease, known as Duchenne. By the time I reached the 5th grade I had to go to a wheelchair and have had to use one ever since. I am very fortunate in that most of the people with my affliction do not make it beyond 25 years of age. I am a Christian and thank God for every day He's given me and continues to bless me with. :)
I have been a big fan of the Smurfs ever since their cartoon first aired in the United States on September 12, 1981. I can still barely recall my anticipation to see what these little blue creatures were all about, from the advertisements I had seen for their debute. Like many others, I grew up with the Smurfs as they were a mainstay on Saturday mornings for many years. I always looked forward to watching them every weekend.
However, my attention waned as their final season seemed to drag on with no end to their being stuck in time in sight. I had not thought about the Smurfs very often over the years until 2010, when advertisements for The Smurfs Movie in 3D were everywhere. I was very hesitant to go see it at first, expecting the Smurfs of my childhood to be ruined somehow by a modern take on them. After finally seeing this movie in 3D near the end of it's run in theaters, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it and my interest in the Smurfs had been rekindled. I had been going through a slight bout of depression and the Smurfs brought me right out of it!
I found bluebuddies.com in an internet search for information about Smurfs right after I saw the Smurfs movie and after joining as SmurfFan82874, I was immediately made to feel welcome. Inspired by the fan art and fanfic found there, I decided to give it a go. ;) I have drawn a few Smurfs, begun creating my own Smurfs and started crafting my first story, with future stories in mind, all of which will be found on this website as they are completed.
I was never into Smurfs figurines until recently, but I had a few Smurfs folders and a few Smurfs books. The few Smurfs books I had before the move were donated to a preschool ran by family friends years ago. After getting back into Smurfs I have begun to slowly rebuild my collection of Smurfs related books and have started collecting few PVC Smurfs and the movie line of Jakk's Pacific Smurfs action figures.
Aside from my fondness of Smurfs, I DO have other interests. :D I am a huge fan of both Star Wars and Star Trek, and I like scifi, fantasy and adventure in movies, television and books. I have a large collection of DVD's, comic books and novels and a few toy lines and several eagle sculptures. Among my other interests are Flash Gorden, Buck Rogers, He-Man, She-Ra, Jem, Thundercats, Silverhawks, Transformers and Care Bears. I like watching N.C.I.S, Unforgettable, Hawaii 5-O, Falling Skies, The Mentalist, Once Upon A Time, Pan Am, White Collar, Common Law, A Gifted Man, Last Man Standing, Covert Affairs, Nikita, Longmire, The Glades and Burn Notice, too. I also like various kinds of music, 50's and 60's rock, western swing, bluegrass, cowboy songs and some jazz, dixieland, 40's music and country.
My parents have been in or had their own acoustic bluegrass bands, so I have been around music my whole life. Around 1998 I started songwriting and my first song was recorded professionally by a big name in the bluegrass music industry, Doyle Lawson. :) I write mostly gospel music but have also written a few secular and western songs. I have written a few poems as well. My family knew the recent former owner of the historic Bean Blossom music park, famed in bluegrass circles for the bluegrass music festivals they host, and I was their Web Administrator for several years.
Lastly, I love animals and have the cutest little red short-haired miniature dachshund you have ever seen, named Schatzie Pearl. :)
